Bacterial glycosylation

Bacterial glycosylation pathways exceed by far the diversity of eukaryotic glycosylation. The complexity of bacterial glycosylation is illustrated first by the extensive array of donor substrates including more than 70 nucleotide-activated sugars. Furthermore, bacterial glycosylation encompass several classes of polysaccharides and glycoconjugates, including peptidoglycan, lipopolysaccharide, lipoarabinomannan, and various forms of protein glycosylation. Accordingly, the standard nomenclature system had to be extended to cover the complexity of bacterial carbohydrates.
