The Department of Physiology (www.physiol.uzh.ch) at the University of Zurich (UZH) seeks to support applicants for the SNSF Starting Grants 2024 awarded by the Swiss National Science
Foundation (SNSF). Candidates with the aim to establish an independent research group and to
explore fundamental questions in Physiology and Biomedicine are encouraged to apply. Eligible
candidates fulfill the requirements by the SNSF for the Starting Grant 2024 (call opens in
November 2023; application deadline February 1st, 2024; see SNSF Starting Grants), including
at least 3 years of research experience after their PhD, or at least 3 years of clinical work and at
least 2 years of research experience after their MD. The SNSF Starting Grant Call 2024 is open
to researchers of any nationality. Awardees will be appointed as non-tenure track Assistant
Professors at UZH.
Candidate Profile
Applicants have a record of research excellence and wish to develop an independent research
group within the Department of Physiology at UZH. Applicants with an innovative research
program that complements and enhances the research portfolio of the Department of
Physiology as well as the general UZH Life Sciences Community are particularly encouraged to
apply.
The Department’s offer
Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an in-person pre-selection symposium at the
Department of Physiology in Zurich in October 2023. The Department will sponsor the
application of the pre-selected candidate(s) to the SNSF Starting Grant and act as the host
institution. Applicants can request from the SNSF a budget of up to CHF 1.8 million for a period
of five years, which includes the candidate’s salary. The Department of Physiology will make a
financial contribution and provide the necessary lab space, administrative and IT support,
access to state-of-the-art core facilities and excellent graduate school programs in an
international and vibrant life sciences community formed by researchers from UZH, ETH Zurich,
and the University Hospitals of Zurich.

summary (1-2 pages) of the future research program, and the contact information of 3
references. Achieving gender equality is a strategic goal of UZH and the Department of
